Quick answer

A good World of Warcraft name is 2 to 12 letters, has no numbers, spaces or apostrophes, and sounds like it belongs to your race: flowing names like Shandrael for Night Elves, sturdy names like Torrhoof for Tauren, and harsh names like Grukmar for Orcs. If your first choice is taken, swap one vowel or add a syllable rather than adding numbers, which the game does not allow.

Pick a style, then generate a WoW name idea.

WoW names have to do two jobs: pass the game's name filter and sound right in Azeroth. Each race has its own feel, so a name that suits a Blood Elf mage will look odd on a Tauren warrior.

WoW character name rules

World of Warcraft character names must be 2 to 12 characters long and use letters only, with no numbers, spaces or symbols. You cannot use more than two of the same letter in a row ("Aaaron" is rejected). The first letter is capitalised automatically.

That means lore-style names with apostrophes, like Vol'jin or Lor'themar, can't be copied directly. Drop the apostrophe and blend the parts instead: Voljinn, Lorthem. Popular names and famous lore names are usually taken on busy realms, so have two or three backups ready.

Night Elf and Blood Elf names

Night Elf names are soft and flowing, often ending in -iel, -ris, -dra or -wyn: Shandrael, Ilyandra, Aelthris, Sylvenna, Thaeldris, Myrandel.

Blood Elf names sound elegant and a little proud, often with "th", "ae" and "or" sounds: Kaelthor, Liadrien, Saelorin, Thalendris, Aerithas, Velanis.

Tauren, Troll and Orc names

Tauren names are calm and earthy, often paired with nature or hoof words: Torrhoof, Mahkuno, Brannok, Kashtauk, Rainmane, Sunrunner.

Troll names are rhythmic, with "z", "j" and "k" sounds and repeated syllables: Zuljinn, Rokhan, Vozenji, Zalmaka, Jinzari, Tazkal.

Orc names are short and hard, built on "g", "k", "r" and "th" sounds: Grukmar, Thrakgor, Durzak, Gromkash, Kargath, Mogruk.

Names by class

Paladins and priests suit noble, bright names: Lightward, Aurelion, Valemar.

Druids suit nature names: Mossbrook, Thornleaf, Elunara.

Rogues and hunters suit short, sharp names: Vex, Skarr, Nightfang.

Mages and warlocks suit arcane names: Arcanis, Vorthex, Felmira.

All of these fit within the 12-letter limit.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a WoW name be?

World of Warcraft character names must be between 2 and 12 characters, using letters only.

Can WoW names have numbers or apostrophes?

No. Names can contain letters only, so no numbers, spaces, apostrophes or symbols, and no more than two identical letters in a row.

What is a good Night Elf name?

Soft, flowing names work best, such as Shandrael, Ilyandra, Aelthris or Sylvenna.

What if my WoW name is taken?

Change one vowel, add a short syllable, or swap a letter for a similar one (k for c). Numbers are not allowed, so creative spelling is the usual fix.
